Hockey Bedroom Inspiration

We are in a rental right now while we keep any eye out for the “right” house for us. In the meantime, we are (okay, I am) going a little squirrelly, wanting to dig into some fixer upper projects and feeling frustrated by our inability to make this house our own.

Once we finally make a move, Easton and has made big plans for graffiti fun in his new room and the only thing that Cadence asked for this year for Christmas was “room décor”, so she is obviously feeling a little boxed in here in the “yellow house” too.

While I dream about the next step, I thought that it might be helpful to other families with “hockey obsessed” kids, to see some Hockey Bedroom Inspiration. We had a really fun one in our last house and it was a tiny bedroom, so really it has some usable ideas, no matter the size of your space.

(You can see that the hockey light, (pictured in the photos below) is missing in this photo. We removed it when we listed our house to sell as we had planned to bring the light with us.)

If anyone needs it, I would be happy to put together a quick tutorial on how to do the wall mural (fans) using a slide projector, but seriously, it is as easy as it sounds. Project on to wall. Trace. Paint.

His room was so small that we were limited to putting the bed over the window. At first we were worried that this would make the room too dark, but it didn’t, the blinds still worked properly and it wasn’t an issue.

Some of the sourcing, incase you are thinking about tacking a hockey project include:

-“Penalty Box” sign - Canadian Tire (they still carry it, I saw it recently)

-Metal lockers (repurposed from an old staff room)-purchased on kijiji (used instead of a dresser…this is a really fun piece that will transition well to his next “graffiti” room and maybe even on to college for Easton or even our garage one day.

-Hockey light - Cartwright Lighting in Calgary, but I have seen it online too.

-Loft bed and ladder, designed by me, was custom made to fit the room by a wonderful local carpenter. It was a double mattress size, with a platform at the top of the ladder. I ordered the netting by the yard from a hockey net company, unfortunately I cannot find their information anymore. We considered doing it ourselves but didn’t want there to be any posts holding it up, and we had visions of the whole family being snuggled into the bed reading and crashing violently to the floor. Eek. (The same carpenter also custom cut and sanded the edges of the plexiglass shooting platform)

-Net - Sportchek

-Upper platform cube shelves - Ikea

-Blue and Yellow faux hockey boards were just baseboards that my husband painted and installed. Red stripes were painted directly on the wall.

-Under Bed lighting - Costco (plug in under counter lighting, with a motion sensor so it turned on with the swipe of a hand).

Happy decorating! I wish I was doing it with you.
